Combined Science Past Papers

GCSE Combined Science (also called Trilogy or Double Science) covers biology, chemistry, and physics content leading to two GCSE grades. Past papers assess key concepts from all three sciences including cells, chemical reactions, energy, and forces. Available in Foundation and Higher tiers, this qualification provides a broad scientific education suitable for students not taking separate sciences.

Top Exam Tips for Combined Science

1. Remember — it's 6 papers, not 3

Combined Science has two Biology papers, two Chemistry papers, and two Physics papers. That's a lot of content to revise, so start early and spread it out.

2. Foundation vs Higher — know your tier

Foundation covers grades 1-1 to 5-5. Higher covers 4-4 to 9-9. If you're on the Higher/Foundation boundary, practise both — your school may move you up or down.

3. Don't neglect any of the three sciences

Your two GCSE grades are based on ALL six papers combined. A weak Chemistry score will drag down your overall grade even if Biology and Physics are strong.

4. Learn the required practicals for all three sciences

There are 21 required practicals across the trilogy. They come up every year and are often the most straightforward marks on the paper.

5. Use the specification checklist to track your revision

Download the AQA or Edexcel specification and tick off each topic as you revise it. This prevents you from missing whole sections.

Combined Science Grade Boundaries — What to Expect

Combined Science is a double award — you receive two GCSE grades (e.g., 7-7 or 6-5). Your marks across all six papers are added together and converted to a grade pair. A grade 4-4 (standard pass) typically needs around 35-40% overall, while a 7-7 needs roughly 60-65%. Because it's combined, a strong performance in one science can compensate for a weaker one.

Note: Exact grade boundaries are set after marking each year and published on results day. The figures above are general guidance based on recent series. See our GCSE grades explained guide for more on how the 9-1 system works.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

These are the errors examiners see most often. Avoid them and you’ll be ahead of the pack:

Revising only two out of three sciences

All six papers count equally. A weak Chemistry can drop a 7-7 to a 6-5

Not knowing which content is Higher-only

Check the specification — Higher-only content is clearly marked. Foundation students should not waste time on it

Mixing up terminology between sciences

'Displacement' means different things in Chemistry (reactivity) and Physics (distance in a direction). Be clear which subject context you're in

Skipping the equation practice

Physics papers contain lots of calculations. Combined Science students find these harder because they have less Physics lesson time

Rushing the last paper due to exam fatigue

Six science exams is exhausting. Plan your revision so the later papers (Chemistry P2, Physics P2) get equal attention

Examiner Insights

The required practicals are identical between Combined and Separate Science — they're worth the same marks and appear just as frequently.

Students often perform worst on their final science paper due to fatigue — make sure you revise the later papers just as thoroughly.

Mathematical skills account for at least 20% of Combined Science marks overall. Practise calculations from all three disciplines.
