Mathematics Past Papers
GCSE Mathematics past papers cover algebra, geometry, statistics, and number operations. Papers are available in Foundation and Higher tiers to suit different ability levels. Topics include algebraic expressions, trigonometry, probability, and data analysis. Students can practice problem-solving skills and exam techniques using official past papers from all major exam boards including AQA, Edexcel, and OCR.

Top Exam Tips for Mathematics
1. Show all your working
Even if you get the wrong final answer, method marks can rescue you. Examiners award marks for each correct step β a 5-mark question might give 4 marks for working and only 1 for the answer.
2. Paper 1 is non-calculator β practise without one
Many students rely too heavily on calculators during revision. Spend time practising long multiplication, division, and fraction arithmetic by hand so Paper 1 doesn't catch you off guard.
3. Read the question twice before starting
Maths questions often contain key words like 'simplify', 'hence', or 'give your answer in the formβ¦' that tell you exactly what format they want. Missing these costs easy marks.
4. Use past paper mark schemes to learn mark allocation
If a question is worth 1 mark, don't spend 5 minutes on it. If it's worth 5 marks, there are multiple steps β plan your approach before writing.
5. Don't leave questions blank
Even writing down a formula or drawing a diagram can earn a method mark. On multiple-choice or 'circle the answer' questions, always have a go.
Mathematics Grade Boundaries β What to Expect
GCSE Maths grade boundaries vary each year depending on paper difficulty. As a rough guide, a grade 4 (standard pass) typically requires around 15-20% of total marks on Higher tier, or 55-65% on Foundation tier. A grade 7 usually needs around 55-65% on Higher. Grade 9 is the most competitive β typically requiring 75-85% on Higher tier. Remember: Foundation tier caps at grade 5, so if you're aiming for grades 6-9, you must sit the Higher papers.
Note: Exact grade boundaries are set after marking each year and published on results day. The figures above are general guidance based on recent series. See our GCSE grades explained guide for more on how the 9-1 system works.

Common Mistakes to Avoid
These are the errors examiners see most often. Avoid them and youβll be ahead of the pack:
βNot showing working on 'show that' questions
βWrite every step, even if it seems obvious β these questions award marks for the method, not just the answer
βMixing up the area and perimeter formulas
βArea = space inside (measured in cmΒ²), Perimeter = distance around the outside (measured in cm)
βForgetting units in context questions
βIf the question involves money, write Β£. If it's measurement, write cm, m, kg, etc. Check what units the question asks for
βRounding too early in multi-step calculations
βKeep full calculator values until the very end, then round to the required degree of accuracy
βNot reading graph scales carefully
βCheck what each small square represents before reading values β it's not always 1
Examiner Insights
βRatio and proportion questions appear on almost every paper and are often poorly answered β practise these thoroughly.β
βThe 'quality of written communication' mark on longer questions requires a clear, logical chain of reasoning β not just a correct answer.β
βExaminers report that students frequently lose marks on unit conversions, particularly between metric units and between area/volume units.β
